Internet marketing is the process of making money by selling products or services via the internet. There are several ways to start and grow a successful business online. One of these is to sell somebody else’s product.

This business plan is referred to as affiliate marketing. In recent times this seems to have morphed into a new name which is performance marketing. And no, that has nothing to do with being on stage.

The name performance marketing refers to the fact that you only get paid if you have made a sale or performed. All your marketing efforts to sell somebody else’s product will only provide a return when successful.

The successful businesses that offer affiliate programs are the ones that assist their affiliate partners with as much sales material as possible. This includes copy for sales pages, suggested keywords and copy for email campaigns amongst many.

Some of the above terminology will be foreign to you, but is all part of the strange terrain new internet marketers will need to get used to. What you might know from selling a product with an advert in the newspapers, is now not as useful. A whole dictionary of new terms will need to be learnt.

As much as the internet is making quite a large noise about the affiliate business model, it has been around for a very long time. Just as a kind of example think of supermarkets. The bulk of the products a supermarket sells is being sold on behalf of other manufacturers.

The supermarkets make a mark-up or commission on the sale of each product and rarely make their own products. Just as online affiliates they only get paid when they make a sale. Even the in-house butchers are often run by external experts. They might cut up and re-package the meat but they don’t have a pig farm in the parking lot behind the building.

In the same way, you as an affiliate would make a commission on each product you sell on behalf of somebody else. There are many different products that are sold online. For the new internet marketer who joins the online community the eBook is often the first choice.

Besides eBooks there are a myriad of products that you can sell on behalf of individuals or companies. From advice and training to selling software, games, toys, gadgets the market is endless. Alone the range of products available to make the internet marketer’s life easier is huge.

It’s not just technology products that are huge sellers. The diet market with diet and exercise programs, diet supplements and instant thin pills is a multi billion dollar business. For just about every interest and hobby there are affiliate programs available.

The choice is truly mind blowing. For most new internet marketers having such a huge choice is actually a disadvantage. You can waste a lot of time and effort deciding on a product or product range and then end up changing to another because you might make money, never allowing ones internet marketing strategies to take proper root.

As with all marketing activities, online marketing requires skills, patience and perseverance. Effort and hard work will pay off.
