Authority sites are sites that have been ranked by search engines as having authority site status. Having a site that is considered an authority on a topic will make search engine optimisation of that site a lot easier.

What makes an authority site?

One of the obvious distinguishing features is that authority sites have more content and more pages than other sites. Sites with more content and pages will have an advantage over sites that lack in this area.

But even more important than content and number of pages are the back links coming to an authority site especially those from other authority sites. It is important to remember that same or similar keywords will determine the relevance of the link.

How do you establish your sites as an authority site?

The first and obvious start to this is to add more pages and content to your site. Then add onto this some authority links from other similar or same authority sites. Although this may sound simple some research is advised.

Do some research to determine what the competition is doing and how they are going about it. New ideas and processes are constantly being thought of and developed. Learn from what others are doing.

Once you have decided on the pages that need adding, you will need to find suitable content. As you would like to add keyword-rich content it is sometimes advisable to use the service of experienced copy writers.

The goal of many webmasters is to have their websites achieve the status of an authority site for their most important keywords. Inserting these keywords into the copy for your new pages will be very important.

An authority site also requires a healthy dose of PageRank. Most authority sites have at least a PR7, with many being much higher.

How do you yourself own an authority site? Fairly straight forward answer to that. Become an authority. It’s not that difficult.

Most of the problems that internet marketers face are tied to the fact that they are trying to do something very quickly. In fact many snake oil sales people tend to sell them the concept that they can make thousands of dollars in a few days.

So where does that fit into building an authority site? Not at all. Yet an authority site will be truly important if you want to build a business for the long haul. Do you want a blog or site that has recognition for years to come?

Do you want to have a business that allows you to sell new products on a regular basis or do you want to have the odd one off wonder that might actually give you some return over a few day’s of work?

Wouldn’t it be better to build a business that will last for a while and that through its reputation and authority status allows you to introduce new products and services on a constant basis and bring you income for a few years to come? No brainer.
