You Have To Be Different If You Want An Authority Site

How do you get to be famous? What will make your business more successful than anybody else’s? It’s what boils down to ‘being remarkable’ a phrase that Seth Godin has spoken and written about extensively. In fact he wrote a whole book on it and called it ‘Purple Cow’.

Authority sites are sites that the search engines see as being an authority in any subject or niche. A good example of an authority site is answer.com. The search engines see this web site as being an authority in a number of different niche areas, and as a result many pages on the answer.com site rank highly in all types of search results. Even if it has the same content that is found on other web sites.

What is the result of this exercise? If you have an authority site, the search engines will rank your site higher than other sites with the exact same content, even if your site has posted the content after other web sites. This is insightful information because now there is finally definitive proof to create quality content websites.

For anybody moving into the internet marketing space, getting an understanding of the being remarkable tag is very important. As a newbie marketer you might want to read Godin’s book. Or you might want to enjoy a few autobiographies of famous people. They all stand out by being remarkable in their field.

That could mean being remarkable as a scientist, artist, musician or actor. In whatever sphere these people operate in, they are famous because they have done something remarkable. In many instances they have been remarkable over a long period of time.

When you approach your first steps into the internet space, understand that nothing is different in the online world. What would get you noticed in the real world are the same characteristics that would make you get noticed in the online world.

It doesn’t really matter what you are remarkable about. There are people in the Guinness Book of Records who are remarkable in their skills in playing with marbles, or jumping through hoops or being the fattest man on earth. You might not think they are particularly noteworthy, but many people will.

The same applies in the online world. You can be remarkable at the smallest discipline, the most remotest bit of knowledge. It doesn’t matter. All that matters is that you are remarkable. There are many people out there who have similar interests to you and will provide a ready audience. But you have to be remarkable at that one thing.

When you set up your first blog with a view to becoming an authority and establishing an authority site then you need to decide what will make you and your blog remarkable. Perhaps you might want to see what others have done?

Look around, especially in the niche or field you are particularly interested in. See what others have done. Do you remember any of them after you have left their sites? If not, they are not particularly remarkable. Check to see what they could be doing wrong and what you might want to suggest they do to make themselves stand out more.

Make a note of all of these elements so that you can learn from their mistakes and incorporate some things that they are doing right. It might be content and design. It could be the effective use of video. You could be impressed by the many guest bloggers.

Whatever it is that is making you sit up and take note, that is what’s working. Do some of that. An ad agency, Bates 141, made this concept famous. It’s called a USP or Unique Selling Proposition. In one sentence or even just a few words you describe what makes you special amongst all the other also rans. Do this before you go one step further.

I noticed that authority sites usually do something different compared to other sites in their niche. They have a different design or hook that readers find appealing.
