Many years ago the Coca Cola company did an experiment. They had been spending millions of Dollars in advertising their products. Then one of their market research companies told them that their brand had found universal acceptance and they thought they could let off a bit with their advertising.
They did this for one year. At the end of the year they had lost market share. They started advertising again. If a huge brand such as Coca Cola can feel the pinch if they do not keep themselves in view of their consumers, then you can imagine what your blog does if you don’t work at being visible.
Seth Godin who regularly is the number one read blog in the marketing industry, posts at least one blog every day, sometimes more and each one looks nonchalant, but is in fact crafted and reworked by him. Nothing haphazard is posted. It’s all truly worked through.
That means he is the number one read blog in his field. Mostly that is. He is sometimes pipped at the post by others, but generally he is number one. He works at it. He makes a noise, he is noticeable.
Treat your blog and your readers with the same respect. But besides respect, also ensure that you are noticed.
Of course a great headline to your articles will bring you many readers. Repeat and rinse. Every time. But besides the headline, what will grow a faithful following for you will be well written and well crafted content.
It’s the same with other products on the market. The packaging needs to stand out. That’s why you need good headlines for your articles. But if the content is no good, then people will not buy that product again even if has wonderful packaging.
The same applies to your blog. It is definitely important to have headlines to your articles that make people sit up and take note. But you have to follow this through with content that will keep the reader with you and even wanting to sign up for an RSS feed or offer their email addresses for direct mailing.
There are many well read bloggers who produce good headlines and follow it up with excellent content. Those are the ones who have thousands of readers who read every article because they know there’s going to be good content that they will enjoy reading.
But as with all things, even Coca Cola found this out, you have to be excellent most of the time. Sure you can slip up once in a while with an article that’s not that scintilating. But your readers will not let you off the hook too often.
A headline that pulls your readers in and content that follows through, on a constant basis, is what you will need to produce in order to ensure that you are top of mind to your audience. It’s a constant battle, but if you get it right it is well worth the hard work.
